Those hotel magnetic key cards….

This is only for those who still feel that we have a right to privacy, of course… and for those who may wish to take steps to limit their exposure to identity theft… all those who’d rather think ‘if yoo’ve dun nuffink wrong, yoo’ve got nuffink to ‘ide’ can go back to the latest episode of eastenders, or pop idol….

Ever wonder what is on your magnetic key card?

a. Customer’s name
B. Customer’s partial home address
c. Hotel room number
d. Check-in date and out dates
e. Customer’s credit card number and expiration date!

When you turn them in to the front desk your personal information is there for any employee to access by simply scanning the card in the hotel scanner An employee can take a hand full of cards home and using a scanning device, access the information onto a laptop computer and go shopping at your expense.

Simply put, hotels do not erase the information on these cards until an employee reissues the card to the next hotel guest. At that time, the new guest’s information is electronically ‘overwritten’ on the card and the previous guest’s information is erased in the overwriting process.

But until the card is rewritten for the next guest, it usually is kept in a drawer at the front desk with YOUR INFORMATION ON IT!

The bottom line is: Keep the cards, take them home with you, or destroy them. NEVER leave them behind in the room or room wastebasket, and NEVER turn them into the front desk when you check out of a room. They will not charge you for the card (it’s illegal) and you’ll be sure you are not leaving a lot of valuable personal information on it that could be easily lifted off with any simple scanning device card reader.

For the same reason, if you arrive at the airport and discover you still have the card key in your pocket, do not toss it in an airport trash basket. Take it home and destroy it by cutting it up, especially through the electronic information strip!

Or, if you have a small magnet, pass it across the magnetic strip several times. Then try it in the door, it will not work. It erases everything on the card.

FORWARD to friends and family, if you are at all bothered by this information…..

A funny thing happened….

"Life is what happens to you while you’re busy making other plans." – John Lennon

Well, there we were, trying to decide what to do next, Vancouver, Toronto, when I get a Skype call from the Phantom, saying I need to get back to the UK, soon, as he may have some gigs lined up and a possible support slot for a band on their European tour in 2009, due to some of the music we have been recording being heard. Funny old world.

So, plans are underway, for a return to the UK, for me and maybe the rest of the clan if projects become more long term. I have a photo assignment scheduled at the start of April for a couple of days, then may leave for the UK from mid April for at least a few weeks, to start rehearsing, do some more recording and to put some finishing touches to the album, which I hope we’ll finally get out in May.

JB @ The Mean Fiddler, London, UK

Exciting times are afoot again, Jesus Boom may be dusting off the old disco shirt for one more stint on the dancefloor as they say…. or as a doctor once said to his captain….

McCoy: You’re hiding. Hiding behind rules and regulations.
Kirk: Who am I hiding from?
McCoy: From yourself, Admiral.
Kirk: Don’t mince words, Bones. What do you really think?
McCoy: Jim, I’m your doctor and I’m your friend. Get back your command. Get it back before you turn into part of this collection. Before you really do grow old.

I knew it was about time I discovered my old ST collection and always thought there was more magic in there, if you got past the wobbly sets…..

The Names Bond….

Who would have thought it, eh…. just as we are working on the album, the opportunity comes up for us to submit a tune for a new James Bond audiobook….

So, this morning via Skype, we’ve been bouncing ideas back and forth and we think we have a rough tune bubbling away. The mic is warming up and The Phantom is figuring out the arrangement, meanwhile I’m dusting off the old Shirley Bassey voice, getting it ready for a run through.

More news when we get it, as they say.

Money As Debt….

In light of the current fiasco surrounding Northern Rock, back in the UK and banking, mortgages and loans problems, I thought I’d post an interesting video I saw, which certainly sheds some light on the whole banking industry.

So, do yourself a favour, make yourself a cup of tea, free up 45 mins (let’s face it, your favourite soap probably takes 30mins, plus ads…), and see how the whole money industry works and why they aren’t going to be teaching kids the “system” in schools….

It’s time to find your voice….

After reading John Pilger’s book, "Freedom Next Time" (I urge others to read the same book, and feel the same way about their lives as they did prior), not that I wasn’t already "out", I’ve joined the campaign. I see no other answers, not that I ever did and maybe, this will encourage others, who feel the same way.

News Round Up

Scientists ask: Where have all the dolphins gone?

‘The alarming drop in numbers of the Bay’s three most common species of dolphin — the striped, bottlenose and common — can be attributed to one or both of two causes, Clive Martin, senior wildlife officer for the Biscay Dolphin Research Programme, told AFP.

"We know for a fact that by-catch is killing thousands of dolphins every year," he said, referring to commercial fishing operations in the bay, which is formed by the northern coast of Spain and the eastern French seaboard up to the tip of Brittany.’

Fingerprint scanning at nursery

‘The nursery said the measures enhanced security A fingerprint scanning system is being introduced at a nursery in Bath to allow only parents and staff access. The biometric controls are being introduced at the First Steps nursery to "enhance existing security arrangements".’

Chertoff: You Will Submit to the Control Grid

‘“Americans may need passports to board domestic flights or to picnic in a national park next year if they live in one of the states defying the federal Real ID Act,” reports CNN. “The Department of Homeland Security insists Real ID is an essential weapon in the war on terror, but privacy and civil liberties watchdogs are calling the initiative an overly intrusive measure that smacks of Big Brother"

Outcry over rise in forced adoptions

‘Record numbers of young children are being removed from their parents and adopted unjustly because of government targets and the "secrecy" of the family courts, it was claimed today. Campaigners say there are now more than 100 cases of possible miscarriages of justice where children have been forcibly adopted.

The figures, revealed in BBC Radio 4’s Face the Facts programme, claims the number of parents in England who have had to give up their children, despite insufficient evidence they were causing them harm, has now hit record levels.’

‘Put CCTV in addicts’ homes to protect children’

‘A controversial plan for CCTV to be used to protect children in the homes of chaotic drug-abusing parents has been proposed by one of Scotland’s most eminent drugs experts. Professor Neil McKeganey, head of the centre for Drug Misuse Research at Glasgow University, believes radical measures are required to protect the estimated 160,000 children in Scotland living with an alcoholic or drug-addicted parent.’

Sunday Morning,….

Nothing like a rainy day to stop the fun at the beach and get some real work cracking….

With the coffee flowing, I’ve been trying to finish some projects. Having quit the day trading, it’s not like I don’t need to get a move on or nothing….

Anyway, we’ve been putting some finishing touches to Leigh’s site which is coming along finally. We had a bit of block as to what to do, but a neat change of style and the creative juices are in flow again. Her cards, which have been selling quite well, are now going to be for sale from the site along with her paintings and photography. I’m trying to talk her into sticking a few of mine on there too, seeing as how I’m building it for her….

Then, while pictures are uploading and webpages are doing what they do, I’ve been going through the editing of a short story for another recent creation, set up with a local fisherman,

So, having a real productive moment. Mind you the sun is due back soon, so I better get cracking….
