Homemade Baked Beans….

After discovering they used this BPA stuff in the lining of tin cans and not being able to find the baked beans we like, it became a case of, “Stuff it then, I’ll make them myself!“….

So I did….

Baked Beans....

I found a recipe for some basic bog standard baked beans and after a few trial and error runs, the recipe never being perfect anyway, I think I may have cracked it. They’re easy to do, you just throw all the ingredients in the pot and boil ’em up then leave to simmer for a few hours. The longer it seems the better, after this last batch. What’s in there? Chopped tomatoes, the beans (I used navy beans here, I think you’re supposed to use haricot ones which are a little softer, but leave to boil and they seem to be fine), chilli powder, cayenne powder, water, some golden syrup, pepper and garlic. If you want the full recipe, let me know. I’ve got a few variations which I might try next.

The missus likes ’em so much, she took a bowl of them for her lunch the following day. I had mine with cheese on toast, the bread, again home made, after a tip I got from a reader about using the 4 hour bake. Thanks, Karen!…

The Beautiful Truth Trailers….

OK then, done a bit of digging, found these….

I already knew some of this stuff, maybe you didn’t….

I’ve avoided MSG for a long time now. How? I read the label, if it’s in there, I don’t buy it. You might want to start thinking about it too. Get yourself educated. Don’t take my word for it, don’t take anyone’s word for it. Go find out. Switch your brain on, especially if you have kids…. like the trailer says, the manufacturers are hoping that you are “too busy, or too lazy, or too stupid.” Which one are you?

You need to look out for your kids mate, no one else is going to.

Take care,

M

Candy Warning for Halloween….

Just had this forwarded to me. I already knew about this, as should you all, if you have been keeping up with the news, but if you haven’t, you have been warned….

Halloween Warning: Candy Made in China May be Contaminated with Toxic Melamine
This Halloween, children across the United States may be poisoned with toxic melamine, a potentially deadly chemical that causes severe kidney damage, liver damage and even death. This chemical is found in chocolates and candy products made in China, which is now embroiled in a global melamine scandal involving eggs, animal feed, candies, infant formula, milk products and much more.

If you have time, 20 mins, maybe watch the following….

So, tonight, before you let your kids stuff themselves with their candy, take a moment just to look at what’s in there, especially if they are made in China or contain milk powder.

As I was told, when I started banging on about organic food, “Take care of your kids. No one else is going to.” Now might be a good time to bear that in mind.

Take care, and have a a great Halloween, one and all!

Outdoor Movies….

Throughout the summer, the City of Kelowna put on entertaiment in the city park. Music, of all styles, as well as the odd movie outdoors….

Outdoor Movies....

We saw Happy Feet, took the camp stove down with us, warmed our chilli, wrapped up in our blankets and enjoyed the film. Forgot the torch though, so when the the lights went down, we had a bit of job making sure we had everything. We’re not missing anything, so I guess we found everything….

Bread….

One fruit loaf with cranberries and one, "oregano white", as we call it. I’m starting to get the hang of this bread making thing, 2 in one day, eh….

Bread....

I’ll admit, it’s pretty easy with the bread maker, but still. And it does feel good when you cut it, knowing you made it.

Now, I’m just about to get cracking on some cookies. If I could only remember where I left my "pinny"….

Fruit Salad….

Summer holidays are here, the kids are eating us out of house and home….

Mind you, over the last couple of mornings, Sam has been knocking up a fruit salad for him, me and Holly.

Fruit Salad....

Strawberries, bananas and grapes, all organic. This morning he’s thrown a few cranberries in it. Not bad. He may be a chef in the making.

And now, pet food too….

Little did I know how complicated caring for a pet had become these days.

Having long been an advocate for organic food for us, it appears our latest addition is going to require the same treatment, not that I was going to do anything else….

Mojo Close Up....

You may have seen, read or heard of the recent scare in pet foods (toothpaste too, but I’ll come to that in another post….), you may even have been affected by it, or your pets, although I hope not, but anyway, I’ve 2 things tonight;

A.    You shouldn’t use clay cat litter. 2 reasons, (1) After doing their business, the stuff is on their paws, which they then lick clean, then causing it to sit in their stomachs, along with the (2), the anti bacterial chemicals coating the stuff. Not good.

B.     A certain brand, which we thought was good, is actually the worst, bulking their dry food with grains and wheat. As cats are carnivores, I don’t necessarily think this is a good idea, nutritionally for the little precious. The pet store guy confirmed this.

I’m going to be looking into this a little further in the coming days and weeks, no doubt adding it to the issues broadcast from my soapbox. If anyone wants to add to this, give me more info or just "get involved" leave a comment, or email me,

As Jerry Springer used to say, "Take care of yourselves, and each other." You can add pets to that list now too.

Stay tuned,

M

Food, for thought….

I know I bang on about organic food, but I remember a conversation with a new mother, when asked about her baby food and what was in it.

“Oh, they wouldn’t put it into food if it was bad for you….”

Well, I’ve long known about the dangers of artificial sweeteners, aspartame being a particular bug bear of mine. It’s in most of the diet sodas and also anything that’s sugar free. I remember drinking ordinary Coca Cola, and ordinary Ribena, but the one thing i did do was CLEAN MY TEETH. I have no fillings, I have no teeth problems at all, neither do my 2 brothers, so it can’t have been the level of sugar, but the care, the responsibility I took in looking after my teeth.

So take a moment, to read the following report, from the National Library of Medicine, in the United States, on the “The effect of aspartame administration on oncogene and suppressor gene expressions.

BACKGROUND: Aspartame (L-phenylalanine N-L-alpha-aspartyl-1-methyl ester) is an artificial sweetener with widespread applications. Previously published results have shown that among rats receiving aspartame a significant increase of lymphoreticular neoplasms, brain tumours and transitional cell tumours occurred. The aim of our short-term experiment was to investigate the biological effect of aspartame consumption by determining the expressions of key oncogenes and a tumour suppressor gene. MATERIALS AND METHODS: After one week per os administration of various doses of aspartame to CBA/CA female mice, p53, c-myc, Ha-ras gene expression alterations were determined in individual organs. RESULTS: The results showed an increase in gene expressions concerning all the investigated genes especially in organs with a high proliferation rate: lymphoreticular organs, bone-marrow and kidney.

CONCLUSION: Aspartame has a biological effect even at the recommended daily maximum dose.

So, erm, next time you are doing the shopping, just check out the ingredients, eh. Avoid at all costs. artificial sweeteners. They might not put it in if it’s bad for, but they sure will put it in if they can make a profit.

Take care one and all,

M
